Surf
Therapy

Enhancing Mental Health through Innovation

Surf Therapy is an innovative mental health intervention that combines surfing with structured therapeutic activities to improve the mental well-being of participants. Adopted through a partnership between Healthcare For Generations (HFG) formerly Partnership for a HIV Free Generation and Waves for Change, Surf Therapy is particularly aimed at addressing complex challenges faced by youth, such as gender-based violence, early marriage, teenage pregnancies, poverty, and poor mental health

Key Components

  1. Structured Sessions: Participants undergo a series of sessions that include surfing, floating, and immersion activities, designed to build their confidence and social skills.
  2. Social Support Networks: The program encourages the formation of supportive relationships among participants, and between participants and coaches. This support network is critical for addressing issues like anxiety, depression, and social isolation.
  3. Measuring Impact: The effectiveness of Surf Therapy is evaluated using the World Health Organization-5 Wellbeing Index (WHO-5). This scale measures mental well-being at the start, midpoint, and end of the intervention, ensuring that any changes in participants’ mental health can be tracked and analyzed.
